Common Pet Emergencies

Determining when to seek emergency care isn’t always easy for pet parents. After all, our four-legged family members can’t tell us when they aren’t feeling well or explain their symptoms to us. And to make matters even more difficult, animals instinctively hide signs of pain, weakness and illness—often until the problem has become so severe that they can no longer mask their symptoms.

In many cases, scheduling an appointment with your regular veterinarian is a suitable option. However, we urge you to seek immediate veterinary care if you have any reason to suspect that your pet could be facing a serious problem. Erring on the side of caution is always your best bet when it comes to something as crucial as your beloved companion’s health.

Some of the most common situations and symptoms requiring immediate veterinary care include:

Trauma sustained in falls, car accidents, fights with other animals, etc.
Wounds and lacerations, especially those with profuse bleeding
Allergic reactions
Exposure to or ingestion of known toxins or poisons
Foreign object ingestion
Difficulties during labor/delivery
Bleeding from any orifice
Refusal to eat and/or drink for 24+ hours
Refusal to eat and/or drink for 24+ hours
Crying out in pain
Seizures or loss of consciousness
Inability to stand or use hind limbs
Blood in urine or feces
Sudden, unexplained aggressive behavior
Repeated episodes of vomiting/diarrhea
Straining to urinate
Inability to pass urine or stool
This list is by no means exhaustive. You know your pet and understand their “normal” behavior better than anyone else. Please reach out to us if you have any reason to suspect that something is seriously wrong. It’s much better to bring them in and find out there’s nothing wrong than to ignore a problem that turns out to be much more severe than you thought.
